Is Being an HSP causing You Anxiety?

The Highly Sensitive trait can cause us to feel overwhelmed by emotion and can interfere with our relationships, our self esteem and our work.

Some Common HSP Challenges Include:

HSP therapist New Jersey

– Low confidence

–  Conflict avoidance

– Being overly empathic

– Not knowing what you really want, think and feel

– Feeling like an imposter and constantly doubting yourself

– Feeling not good enough

– Feeling resentful in most relationships due to doing so much for others

– Feeling guilty when saying no or doing something that’s just for you

– Absorbing other people’s emotions

– Believing that other people are mad at you for no logical reason

– Accommodating to others’ needs at the expense of your own needs

– Not wanting to “rock the boat”

– Having perfectionistic tendencies and worrying too much about performance

– Fearing disappointing others

– Constantly checking to see how you measure up to others

While the HSP trait can add richness and complexity to life, it can also create overwhelm and a desire to hide from the world. The HSP often gets stuck between finding temporary relief through overly accommodating others or isolating- never finding actual relief, true balance or inner peace. It can also lead to wanting to check out by numbing these emotions through too much escapism (avoidance, over-binging on TV, over-drinking, video-games, etc).

Not only are these solutions short-lived, but they can also lead to living a life in which you are “playing small” and are in a constant state of anxiety, guilt and fear.

Counseling for the HSP can bring you inner freedom

Through an individualized approach, we will discover  unique solutions for you.

Firstly, it is important to note that the HSP trait’s intentions are quite pure and loving and stem from a good place. Secondly, we help you identify that the people pleasing tendencies were originally created to keep you safe (relationally), however are no longer working.

Thirdly, we will assist you in finding freedom from overwhelming emotions through small, incremental actionable steps.

Through the use of mindfulness, we help you attune to your own inner experiences noticing the stories you may tell yourself that still contribute to keeping you stuck. In addition to changing old narratives, we also may reprocess traumatic experiences through a trauma informed lens and EMDR.

The ultimate measure of a successful therapeutic journey with Mindfully Alive and the HSP trait is when our clients tell us that they no longer feel guilty for setting limits with others, no longer feel responsible for other people’s emotions, have a greater awareness of their own needs, wants, ideas and desires, access their own intuition more easily, feel more empowered, and have established reciprocal connections with the people in their lives.

People have reported feeling more mindful and relaxed in their day to day lives, more attuned to their own feelings and feeling closer to their family and friends.

Empathy without boundaries is self destruction.

~Pleased with Mindfully Alive’s Contribution

“I never thought that I would need counseling. I am a strong independent person who always kept my emotions in check. I was always someone who would consult with “myself” when ever a problem came up. However, life tends to overwhelm us, even the strongest of us, and I needed someone who would “talk back”. Mindfully Alive was referred to me by someone I trust, and made time for me when I needed it. Why do I pay to talk to my therapist at Mindfully Alive? Because she is someone I can talk to about all of my thoughts without guilt, judgement, or pressure. Every part of my life I thought I was controlling on my own I have found much relief when speaking with my therapist about. She is down-to-earth, real, and genuine. She listens to you, learns your entire situation, and remembers it. What is “Mindfully Alive”? To me, it’s understanding how my specific mind works, tackling those thoughts I only express to myself, and creating strategies that help Me through the things that are taking up so much of my mind’s space. I highly recommend Mindfully Alive; and hope anyone going through a major life crisis speak with a Licensed Professional Counselor, no matter how strong you may think they are.”

“I started with Mindfully Alive almost a year ago when I was a few months into a new relationship. As a single mom, business owner and now girlfriend,  I was really struggling with anxiety, how to find balance in my life but also how to understand myself and my wants and needs.  My therapist has been my lifeline. She has allowed me a safe place to be vulnerable, share my thoughts and feelings without judgement and to help me work though some of the things that I have been struggling with that I wasn’t even aware of.  I look forward to our weekly sessions because her kindness, knowledge and guidance help me to not only navigate my daily life but on my journey through life”
